A little Italian escape…

Ever got a work-related opportunity that felt more like a present? I did! In the spring of 2015, exactly one year ago, I was invited by beautiful shoebrand Moma to design a collection of bags for them.

Moma, an Italian footwear brand, founded in 1975 by the Gironacci brothers, specializes in men’s and women’s shoes. Their strength is their ability to make shoes, boots and pumps that have a real connection with the people who wear them. In a certain way, only the artisan brothers themselves can provide that raw ‘Moma magic’.

For me, the combination of a long tradition in shoemaking together with an endless originality in a family owned and operating factory, is very special and rare.

The times I travelled to Italy I felt like being drowned in a surrounding with friendly people, beautiful nature, fantastic food and most of all the Moma factory which was filled with a very positive energy and the addictive smell of leather and glue…

In my own personal workspace, in the middle of the collection’s sample room, I could design surrounded by Moma’s DNA. The first thing to start with was Moma’s label, that should be perfectly integrated in every design. The pattern of the thong of a shoe was the base for the label. The bags were shaped behind the machine in the factory, as I never draw but like to work directly with leather. During the first week there was a small Moma bag collection designed. The individual bags were given the names of the characters from the movie ‘ET’, referring to my own initials.

The bags will be in several boutiques that sell Moma as we speak.

The vibe and smell of the Moma factory will always have a special place in my heart. Grazie mille to Gigio, Daniele and the rest of the Moma family for giving me the chance, the confidence and for so kindly taking care of me!
